The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati’s Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (MFSDS&AI) has achieved a major milestone by graduating its first batch of BTech students in Data Science and AI.
The 2021–2025 cohort marks a significant moment for the institute, being the first group of undergraduates to complete this cutting-edge programme, launched in collaboration with the Mehta Family Foundation (MFF) in 2021. IIT Guwahati was among the first IITs to introduce a dedicated undergraduate course in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, long before AI became a mainstream global trend.
Strong Placement Outcomes
According to official placement data, 91% of students from the first graduating batch have been successfully placed. Out of 22 students, 20 received job offers from top global companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Warner Bros Discovery. One student has secured admission for higher studies at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the United States, while two others chose to opt out of placements.
Speaking on the achievement, Professor Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, said that the placement results reaffirm the institute’s academic foresight and the growing demand for AI talent across industries.
Curriculum and Research Excellence
The BTech programme was designed to provide a comprehensive academic foundation through courses in mathematics, science, computer engineering, and specialised AI modules. A distinctive feature of the curriculum was its year-long project component, which enabled students to work on advanced topics including:
Deepfake detection
Large Language Model (LLM) automation
Multimodal healthcare systems
Robotics and intelligent automation
Many of these projects have been published in reputed academic conferences and journals, while others are under review. Students also excelled in national-level competitions such as the Inter-IIT Tech Meet, Amazon ML Challenge, and Citadel Terminal.
Global and Interdisciplinary Exposure
The graduating batch also demonstrated global engagement, with one student completing an international internship in Japan, and several others participating in research, leadership roles, and interdisciplinary collaborations through campus clubs and technical forums.
According to IIT Guwahati, these achievements highlight the interdisciplinary and industry-aligned nature of the programme and its success in preparing students for the evolving data-driven world.
