The IIT Council, the apex coordination body of the 23 premier engineering institutes, is set to reconvene on Monday after a gap of two years. The last meeting was held in April 2023. This session will focus on key reforms, including credit transfer, JEE Advanced exam changes, accreditation, and enhanced support for underprivileged students.
Credit Transfer Under National Credit Framework
One of the central agenda points will be the introduction of a credit-sharing system among IITs under the National Credit Framework (NCrF). Currently, IITs do not follow the NCrF structure, and the council aims to streamline academic mobility by enabling students to transfer credits across different campuses. Additionally, discussions will be held on setting up an intensive, outcome-oriented peer review system to improve institutional performance.
JEE Advanced Reforms
The council is also expected to deliberate on reforms to make the JEE Advanced exam less coaching-dependent, with a view to reduce the heavy reliance on private coaching and make the examination process more equitable.
Student Welfare and Accreditation
Other significant points on the agenda include:
Accreditation of IITs, aligning with the government’s larger education policy goals.
Enhancing scholarships and pocket allowances for SC and ST students, aimed at strengthening social inclusion in higher education.
The meeting is expected to set the tone for reforms that could impact admissions, student mobility, and academic flexibility across all IITs in the coming years.
