Kerala Power Regulator Invites Engineering Colleges to Research Electricity Sector Challenges
The Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission has invited engineering colleges across the state to collaborate on research aimed at addressing challenges in the electricity sector. The initiative seeks to bring academic expertise into regulatory work and develop practical solutions for the changing needs of the power industry.

Through the programme, faculty members and researchers will have an opportunity to contribute their knowledge to issues involving electricity generation, transmission, storage, energy markets and emerging technologies.
The commission plans to select participating institutions through a two-stage process. The first stage will assess the research capabilities of engineering colleges, while the second will involve detailed project proposals from institutions selected for empanelment.
First Stage to Assess Research Capabilities
During the initial stage, engineering colleges will be evaluated based on their research facilities, previous work and relevant experience. Institutions that meet the prescribed requirements will be empanelled with the commission.
Colleges will not need to submit detailed research project proposals during this stage. Instead, the assessment will focus on identifying institutions with the expertise and resources to undertake research relevant to electricity sector challenges.
The process is intended to establish a pool of eligible institutions that can contribute to future research assignments.
Second Stage to Focus on Research Proposals
In the second stage, empanelled institutions will be invited to submit detailed proposals for specific research projects.
Projects may be identified by the commission according to its research requirements or proposed by the participating institutions themselves. Each proposal will be assessed on several factors, including technical merit, relevance to the commission's needs, expected outcomes and the time required for completion.
This approach will allow the commission to evaluate potential projects before selecting those that align with its priorities and practical requirements.
Key Research Areas Identified
The proposed collaboration covers several areas of the electricity sector, including:
Renewable energy: Research into issues associated with the integration and development of renewable power.
Transmission and energy storage: Exploring challenges involving electricity transmission networks and energy storage systems.
Artificial intelligence: Examining potential applications of AI in electricity sector operations and regulatory work.
Data analytics: Using data-based methods to support analysis, planning and decision-making.
Electricity markets: Studying market structures, operations and related regulatory issues.
Energy economics: Examining economic questions associated with electricity supply, pricing and sector development.
The range of topics reflects the growing role of technology, data and economic analysis in electricity sector planning and regulation.
Opportunities for Engineering Colleges and Researchers
The initiative provides engineering colleges with a potential route to apply academic research to practical issues faced by the power sector. Faculty members and researchers may be able to contribute technical analysis, develop solutions and examine emerging technologies relevant to electricity regulation.
For the commission, collaboration with academic institutions could expand access to specialised expertise across different research areas.
Further details about eligibility requirements, the application process, submission deadlines and empanelment conditions should be checked in the commission's official notification.
The initiative is intended to strengthen links between academic research and electricity sector regulation, with the aim of developing evidence-based approaches to the challenges facing Kerala's power sector.
