KCET 2026 Merit List Highlights Changing Performance Trends

The Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET) 2026 results have sparked discussion among educators and students after Karnataka State Board candidates secured a dominant share of top ranks across multiple streams.

The results were announced by Sharan Prakash Patil, with the merit list revealing a significant decline in the representation of CBSE students compared to previous years.

State Board Students Lead Across Major Streams

According to the merit rankings released by the Karnataka Examinations Authority, state board students accounted for the overwhelming majority of top-performing candidates.

Among the overall top rankers:

  • 79 students are from the Karnataka State Board.

  • 19 students are from CBSE.

  • 1 student is from the Telangana State Board.

The trend was particularly evident in engineering admissions, where only one CBSE student secured a position among the top 10 rank holders. This marks a notable shift from previous years when CBSE students had a stronger presence in the engineering merit list.

Agriculture and Allied Courses Witness State Board Dominance

The performance gap became even more pronounced across agriculture and allied disciplines.

Agriculture

  • All top 10 ranks were secured by Karnataka State Board students.

Veterinary Science, Nursing, Yoga and Naturopathy

  • Eight out of the top 10 rank holders belonged to the State Board.

B Pharm and Pharm D

  • CBSE students secured three positions in the top 10 rankings.

The results have intensified discussions regarding academic evaluation systems and preparation strategies adopted by different educational boards.

Bengaluru Students Shine in Engineering Rankings

Bengaluru continued its strong performance in KCET rankings, particularly in engineering admissions.

The top three engineering rank holders are:

  1. Tanisha Karthik – Rank 1

  2. Srajan B S – Rank 2

  3. Ninaad Vasisht – Rank 3

All three students are from leading pre-university colleges in Bengaluru.

Additionally, six of the top 10 engineering rank holders are from the city, highlighting Bengaluru's continued dominance in competitive entrance examinations.

Evaluation Differences Become a Topic of Debate

Educational experts have pointed to differences in evaluation methods as one possible factor influencing this year's results.

For Karnataka State Board students, scores from both II PU–1 and II PU–2 examinations were considered during the ranking process.

Meanwhile, many CBSE students have sought re-evaluation of their Class 12 results due to concerns regarding marking discrepancies and administrative issues. However, revised marks obtained after re-evaluation are not considered by KEA during the admission process.

This has led to renewed discussions about standardization, fairness, and consistency in competitive examination rankings.

CBSE Evaluation Concerns Continue

The CBSE examination cycle has faced scrutiny this year following reports of result-processing issues and concerns related to answer sheet evaluation.

The board's overall Class 12 pass percentage reportedly declined compared to the previous year, further fueling conversations about assessment methodologies and result accuracy.

Thousands of students have applied for re-evaluation, reflecting widespread concerns among candidates and parents regarding score discrepancies.

KCET 2026 Counselling Schedule

The KCET 2026 counselling process is scheduled to begin on June 10.

Key counselling details include:

  • Open entry process will remain available for four days.

  • Engineering, pharmacy, agriculture, and allied course admissions will proceed through KCET rankings.

  • Medical, dental, Ayurveda, homoeopathy, Unani, and related admissions will be based on NEET UG 2026 scores.

  • Separate counselling rounds for medical admissions will be conducted after the release of NEET results and the national counselling schedule.

Growing Debate Over Competitive Exam Evaluation Systems

The KCET 2026 results have become part of a broader national discussion surrounding examination evaluation systems, board-wise performance comparisons, and admission fairness.

While the strong performance of Karnataka State Board students has been widely recognized, the reduced representation of CBSE candidates has prompted questions about differing assessment frameworks and their impact on competitive entrance examination rankings.

As counselling begins, stakeholders across the education sector are expected to continue examining how evaluation methods influence outcomes in high-stakes admissions processes.
